Epic Games Announced – Fortnite – tools for free


Epic Games today announced that it’s going to offer up the underlying software infrastructure and tools used to run its massive, cross-platform Fortnite to other game developers for free. These tools include the ability to sync a player’s profile and in-game purchases across multiple platforms, to provide cross-platform voice communication, and to allow cross-platform and matchmaking, among other capabilities.

Starting a huge set of cross-platform game services

“During 2019, we’ll be starting a huge set of cross-platform game services originally built for Fortnite, and battle-tested with 200,000,000 players around seven programs,” reads the statement . “These services will be free for all programmers, and will soon be open to all motors, all programs, and most of stores. As a developer, you’re free to choose mix-and-match solutions from Epic and others as you desire.”

Substantial transition for Fortnite as a business?

The movement is a substantial transition for Fortnite as a business, with Epic currently positioning the sport as a industry-leading breeding ground for next-generation technology used to build and maintain large-scale online games across games console, PC, and cellular. The following step for Epic, it seems, would be to leverage each the unprecedented, behind-the-scenes technology that helps it become a toolset other game developers could come to rely on to develop games that are similar.

This type of cross-platform technology certainly sounds like it will become a crucial part of online games in the future, and Epic gets the success of Fortnite to establish it.
